The ABBA concert film Abba: The Movie premiers in London (1978).

1990’s

The Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer The Weeknd was born (born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) in Toronto, Ontario (1990).  The Weeknd is one of the world’s best-selling music artists, with over 75 million records sold.  The single Blinding Lights was a global smash hit.

The 1981 Iron Maiden album Killers celebrates a 40th anniversary this month! The 2nd LP from the heavy metal band was their last with vocalist Paul Di’Anno. Not as powerful as their debut, although Martin Birch producing gave the LP a better sound.

The 1985 REM album Fables of the Reconstruction was the band’s first recording outside of the US. A loosely based Southern Gothic concept album, the LP was not particularly favoured by the band or fans. Worth a revisit after 35 years?

The 1996 album Fantastic Planet by American alternative rock band Failure has been described a Nirvana copycat. Sure the influence is more than present, but I do like this album. The band self-produced admirably. Give it a try!

The debut eponymous All About Eve album is 30 years old today! Includes the wonderful track Martha’s Harbour. Does anyone remember their Top of the Pops performance of the track? Waiting to mime, there was no backing track played to them, so they sat motionless!
