1940’s

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr was born (Richard Starkey) on this day 1940 in Dingle, Liverpool, and was the only child of Richard and Elsie Starkey, who were confectioners.   Ringo famously was given occasional singing duties within the band, for songs such as With a Little Help from My Friends and Yellow Submarine.

1970’s

The ABBA musicians Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog marry on this day 1971.  Keyboardist Benny Andersson plays the organ at wedding.

1980’s

The original members of Led Zeppelin played their last ever show as Eissporthalle in Berlin, Germany on this day 1980. Drummer John Bonham’s drink problem had been widely publicised, and had already collapsed on stage in Nuremberg and was rushed to hospital.  Two months later Bonham would unfortunately be dead.

2000’s

The founder member and lead singer/guitarist of Pink Floyd Syd Barrett died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Cambridge, aged 60, on this day 2006. Barrett was musically active for less than ten years, although his legacy and influence lives on.
