1960’s

1963Do You Love Me by Brian Poole & The Tremeloes started a 3 week reign at the top of the UK Singles Chart. The song was written by Motown’s Berry Gordy and features the famous phrases ‘the mashed potato’ and ‘the twist.’ The Contours version was used in the movie Dirty Dancing.

1910’s

1917 – The American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He is known for his improvisational style and jazz standards such as the brilliant Round Midnight.
