The Frank Zappa three-part rock opera Joe’s Garage is 40 years old today! Originally released as two separate LPs, it received mixed reviews given some of the sexual nature of the lyrics.  Despite the crazy lyrics, I’m always impressed by Zappa’s musicianship.  Unique character.  zappa.com

The 1964 album Wahoo! by American pianist and arranger Duke Pearson played a big part in shaping the hard bop direction on the Blue Note label.  Also features Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Joe Henderson on tenor sax.  Splendid arrangements.
