On this Day in Music – 23rd May

1910’s

The great jazz clarinettist and bandleader Artie Shaw was born in New York City on this day 1910.  Born Arthur Jacob, to Harry and Sarah Arshawsky, Shaw will be best remembered for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter’s Begin the Beguine.  He was also a published author of both fiction and non-fiction, and actually started out playing saxophone before switching to the clarinet.
