On this Day in Music – 20th April

1990’s

The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness was held at London’s Wembley Stadium on this day 1992, five months after the death of the legendary Queen frontman.  Metallica opened the show, with performances from Def Leppard, Spinal Tap and Guns N’ Roses to name a few.  The second part of the show saw remaining Queen members take to the stage to play the band’s hits with guest singers including Roger Daltry, George Michael, David Bowie, Elton John and Axl Rose.  All 72,000 tickets were sold in 3 hours, and raised awareness and money for AIDS charities.
