On this Day in Music – 6th August

1970’s

On this day 1973 Stevie Wonder suffered a near-fatal crash in North Carolina, when the car in which we he was travelling, driven by friend John Harris, collided with a truck carrying logs. A piece of timber struck Wonder, leaving him in a coma for four days, and causing him to lose his sense of smell, and temporarily his sense of taste.

The genre of West Coast cool jazz had new kid on the block, when the 24-year-old Chet Baker released his debut album Chet Baker Sings in 1954. The original 8-track release included the wonderful My Funny Valentine and The Thrill is Gone. Was Baker a trumpeter who could sing, or a singer who could play trumpet?
