On this Day in Music – 18th August

1970’s

The Who play their first ‘big’ gig following the passing of drummer Keith Moon on this day 1979.  They headline Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 fans, with support from AC/DC, The Stranglers and Nils Lofgren.

1990’s

Oasis played their first ever gig on this day 1991. The band, without Noel Gallagher, played at the Boardwalk Club, Manchester.  Noel watched the performance, but was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets at the time, and started considering whether he should join his brother Liam in the band.

The 3rd Harry Nilsson album Aerial Ballet, released in 1968, includes the cover of Fred Neil’s Everybody’s Talkin’ which later became a hit single after the movie Midnight Cowboy featured the track. The title came from the high wire circus act of his grandparents.

The Korn LP Follow The Leader is 20 years old today! The American nu metal band’s 3rd release is the their most commercially successful album. Jon Pareles from The New York Times said of lead vocalist Davis as “wrestling with self-hatred, violent impulses, parental execration, and a confused sexual identity.”

The eponymous 1965 debut album by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was one of the first great white blues albums. Great harmonica!
