On this Day in Music – 9th July

1940’s

The original lead vocalist of AC/DC, Bon Scott was born (Ronald Belford Scott) on this day 1946 at Fyfe Jamieson Maternity Hospital in Forfar.  Scott sadly died in a friend’s car following a night of heavy drinking in February 1980.

1970’s

The White Stripes and The Raconteurs frontman Jack White was born on this day 1975.

The 1976 Jackson Browne LP The Pretender was released following the suicide of Browne’s 1st wife, Phyllis Major. Unsurprisingly, given the circumstances, The Pretender is an incredibly moving listen. Includes the singles Here Come Those Tears Again and the title track.

Julie Byrne’s 2nd album, Not Even Happiness was recorded in Byrne’s hometown of Buffalo, NY. Stunning vocals and sparse arrangements, a beautiful listen!
