On this Day in Music – 8th December

1940’s

The American singer-songwriter and musician Gregg Allman, known for performing in the Allman Brothers Band, was born at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on this day 1947.  Allman wrote several of the band’s best known songs, including Whipping Post, Melissa, and Midnight Rider.

1980’s

The musician John Lennon, and founder of The Beatles, was murdered by Mark Chapman outside the Dakota Building in New York City on this day 1980. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby Roosevelt Hospital at 11:00 p.m. (EST).

The album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us by The Everly Brothers is 60 years old this month! As the title suggests their father, Ike Everly, taught them these traditional tracks. The LP was a ‘surprise release’ given the duo’s commercial success as a rock and roll act. As always, tremendous harmonies!

The 1974 Steely Dan album Pretzel Logic was the last to feature the full five members of the band. The critics loved the LP, Bud Scoppa from Rolling Stone described it “a wonderfully fluid ensemble sound.
