On this Day in Music – 4th January


2014Pharrell Williams’s Happy became the UK Number One Single for the first of three spells at the top.  The song, from the Despicable 2 soundtrack, spent a total of 4 weeks at number one, and was one of the most played tracks in 2014.


1936 – Billboard Magazine released their first music chart. Italian-American jazz musician and pioneer jazz violinist Giuseppe “Joe” Venuti took the first top spot with Stop, Look and Listen. Although other record companies despute this, claiming artists on their label had the first number one!
