On this Day in Music – 23rd February

1940’s

The American singer and guitarist Johnny Winter was born (John Dawson Winter III) on this day 1944 in Beaumont, Texas.  One of the greatest blues slide guitarists of all-time.  Winters was found dead in his hotel room two days after his last performance, at the Cahors Blues Festival in France 2014.

1950’s

The English musician Howard Jones (born John Howard Jones) was born on this day 1955 in Southampton, England.  Jones had numerous hit singles in the eighties including What Is Love?, New Song, and Things Can Only Get Better.

The 2010 record Ali & Toumani features Malian musicians Ali Farka Touré on guitar and vocals, and Toumani Diabaté on the kora. The LP is 10 years old today, and was released 4 years after Toure’s death. Beautiful record.

The 2nd Eminem album, The Slim Shady LP, is 20 years old today! Written from the perspective of his alter ego Slim Shady, the LP is witty and engaging despite misogynistic content. The commercial success transformed Eminem from an underground rapper into a celebrity.

The Bob & Gene LP If This World Were Mine is a collection of sweet soul from upstate New York. Recorded during the late 1960’s and re-released by Daptone Records, features stunning vocals, and songs of teenage love. A brilliant listen.
