1930’s

The American singer Nina Simone was born (Eunice Kathleen Waymon) in Tryon, North Carolina in 1933. The singer, and civil rights activist, was best known for her contralto voice, and music in the jazz and blues genres. Her hits included To Love Somebody, I Put A Spell On You, My Baby Just Cares for Me and Feeling Good, to name a few.

1950’s

The American singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter was born in Princeton, New Jersey on this day 1958.   Carpenter’s most successful album to date remains her 1992 release Come On Come On, which has sold in excess of four million copies.

1960’s

The lead guitarist and vocalist for the Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers James Dean Bradfield was born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire (1969).  The band have had numerous hit LPs including Generation Terrorists, The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go.

The name Richard Swift will be unknown to most, but his work with Damien Jurado, The Shins, and The Black Keys will never be forgotten. Sadly, Swift died last year age 41. His final album, The Hex, released shortly before his death is the perfect legacy.

The debut LP Child Is Father to The Man by Blood, Sweat & Tears is 50 years old today! The early contribution of Al Kooper on this album was huge, then he left shortly after the release. A classic post-Sgt Peppers album.
