On this Day in Music – 18th February

The English singer-songwriter Kevin Ayers died (2013) died in his sleep in Montolieu, France, aged 68.  Ayers a founding member of Soft Machine in the mid-1960s, and often cited as a hugely influential musician.

Yoko Ono was born (1933) in Tokyo, to Isoko and Eisuke Ono, a banker and former classical pianist.  Ono is best known for her marriage to John Lennon of The Beatles.

The American jazz and R&B singer Randy Crawford was born (Veronica Crawford) in Macon, Georgia (1952).  Crawford is best known as the guest vocalist on The Crusaders’s top 40 hit Street Life, and her solo 1980 number 2 hit single, One Day I’ll Fly Away.

In 1965 Tired Of Waiting For You by The Kinks was declared the UK Number One Single.  The song only held number one for one week, knocking You’ve Lost That Loving Feelin’ by the Righteous Brothers off the top spot.

On this day 1978 ABBA’s Take A Chance On Me was declared the UK Number One Single where it remained for three weeks.   The song was covered by English synthpop duo Erasure in 1992, as part of their Abba-esque EP, also topping UK Singles Chart for 5 weeks.

The American jazz saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington was born (1981) in Los Angeles, California.
