On this Day in Music – 12th February

The American singer and musician Al Jarreau died (2017) of respiratory failure, age 76, just two days after announcing his retirement from music.  Jarreau is known for his 1981 album Breakin’ Away, and for singing the theme song of the 1980s television series Moonlighting.

The 1975 Keith Jarrett live album The Koln Concert is a performance of legend. Show was organized by 17-year-old Vera Brandes, and held at Opera House in Cologne. Jarrett performed on a poor rehearsal piano during the show. He adapted and the result was spectacular.

The 1975 debut album Dreamboat Annie by then Vancouver based band Heart gave them the nickname ‘the female Led Zeppelin’. Following tensions with the record label, the LP failed to receive the commercial success it deserved. Love Crazy on You.

The 4th album by the Swedish sisters known as First Aid Kit, Ruins, was worth the 4-year wait. The album is fraught with sorrow and expression from break-ups. Love Fireworks and It’s A Shame. Great harmonies as always.
